Window 7 End of Life Quandaries

Microsoft says January, 2020 is end of the line for Windows 7. I remember Windows XP dragged on for years after Microsoft said it would. Wonderings:

* Will Microsoft make good on January, 2020 EOL?

* I have SEVEN Win 7 computers currently. How much trouble will I have getting the drivers for Win 10?

* On Ebay, there are COAs available for as little as $3. Would those do the job?

Thoughts? Suggestions? Thank you.

You can still get the free upgrade with Win 7 you just have to download the win 10 and manually install.

I have not had a lot of driver issues except with really old 10+ years video cards.

I didn’t have any driver issues many years ago when I upgraded. I’m curious how someone ends up with 7 WIN7 computers in 2019, haha.

I’ve been VERY happy with 10. It’s stable, works with everything I’ve thrown at it, and seems to do fine even on older hardware. I think the upgrade to 10 is so easy, Microsoft will definitely  make good on that deadline.

Same here, we also have mostly machines around 10 years old so I wonder if we can even upgrade the operating system or if we’ll need new(er)  machines

I believe support will end shortly after the deadline. There will be a grace period, but not years. Adobe needs more profit, dammit .

These days, I would not want to run an OS that wasn’t getting frequent updates. I only have one laptop left running on Win 7, and it doesn’t get much use anymore since I got a new Surface Go.  Might just swap it over to Linux as a test machine.

Windows 7? Windows XP still had a  5% market share around the world as of 2018.  It was released in 2001.

There is a reason companies are still getting hacked and attacked...mostly old software, or new software without patches.

All EOL means is they stop offering free security patches. You can technically still keep using it if you’re willing to pay.

However, if these systems are not connected to any network, then it doesn’t matter nearly as much that they’re EOL.

As for getting drivers for windows 10, it really depends on which drivers for what hardware.

If it’s old hardware from a defunct company, you might have a problem.

I suggest setting up a windows 10 testbed machine.

Also I typically recommended upgrading your hardware along with upgrading to Win10... and then just migrate the software.

And another approach... get a win10 machine, but then set up a VM running windows 7 for the specific app that can’t run on win10.

It depends on whether the machine needs to stay connected to a network and/or if it’s running software or custom hardware that doesn’t run properly on win10.

In a worst case, you can set up a Win10 machine and run a win7 vm on it.

I’m kinda boned as well. I like Windows Media Center, for the most part (it does what I need for OTA TV quite well , but is kinda sucky at other things) and I  am not quite ready to upgrade to something else. Better the devil you know, right? Most of my machines are dual boot and have 10 installed, but 7 has been good to me and I hate to give it up. If it wasn’t for the WMC issue I’d be running 10 everywhere.

The Win10 kernel has much better plug-n-play support than any previous iteration. When I upgraded my laptop from 7 to 10 it actually uninstalled my biometrics driver (fingerprint scanner) and runs the biometrics natively. It even  rolled over my network adapter driver so I was able to immediately go online and find the few drivers it couldn’t update.

As long as you’re not using XP- era hardware you should be able to find drivers. If your pc is intel-based Intel actually has a free driver utility that will fetch the right packages for you.

FYI - you can activate W indows 10 with a Windows 7 license key.

I work for a large company and have been pushing hard for getting rid of all our windows 7 machines by the end of year.  It’s not going to happen as there are so many legacy products we use that have windows 10 issues but we’ll get close (95%).

Download an ISO from Microsoft? Another Op here says I can activate Win10 with a Win7 key. Truth?

I need to confirm that I can activate Win10 with a valid Win7 COA/key.

I don't think Win10 is a trustworthy product for businesses. Largely due to the baked in nature of quite a few "features" that I think could get hijacked by bad actors.

Yes, and if the computer you are installing too has an activated copy of Windows 7 on it, you enter the windows 7 Key and it will detect what version you have and install the comparable version of 10 Pro for Pro Home for Home etc.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/software-download/windows10

It really is very simple the automatic upgrade is just gone.

Windows Media Center (WMC)  isn’t part of the OS like it was before and I’m not quite ready to give it up just yet. There are workarounds to make it sorta work in 10, but then MS breaks it again with their next update. I’d rather not go through the hassle. I really need to find a good media center for 10 and move on but I haven’t had the time to research, test and install.

You lock all these down with policies. And the OS is a current kernel that's actively patched, better solution to run it than an order version of Windows.

Also, all of my computers are Dell. I’ve been using a Dell Win7 DVD and the Windows activation always goes straight through. Should I look for a Dell Win10 disc and work the same way?

I didn’t have any driver issues many years ago when I upgraded. I’m curious how someone ends up with 7 WIN7 computers in 2019, haha.

Because they like it? I found Windows 8 to be utterly loathsome and Microsoft was running around updating peoples’ OS without even asking them and I gave them the  one-finger salute and installed a utility that blocked them from upgrading my computers. I don’t game or do anything besides MS Office and Adobe CS6. And Oppo...

Most likely a win 7 key will NOT work with a win 10 install.

I’m pretty sure about that.

The best way to upgrade to windows 10 if you don't have an enterprise agreement is to buy new/newer hardware that already comes with the win10 licence.

Better to stick with some 10 year old OS going to EOL amirite

Kinja'd!!!

If you really only need web browsing, light word processing, and some image editing layout and want a modern OS with near decade long support on the same version you’d be better served with something like Ubuntu LTS.

Windows 10 has been out for 4 years now, that’s a lifetime in software.

Yeah, it just feels like work at this point trying to installing it - though maybe you have dedicated disk or USB drive. I never seem to have a copy of Windows and re-download it from MS every time I need it. That usually speeds the install since they also tend to pack in the latest updates to the installer. I also take it that you have people in your household using these PCs? I think I have 4 computers and still consider that to be a lot.

Totally understand on Windows 8. I guess it makes sense if you tried that and just decided to hold off for a while. That forced update shenanigans was utterly maddening.

Gotcha. I play the occasional game, but nothing crazy.

Here’s your upgrade procedure to turn your current Win 7 copies into Windows 10.

What’s your feeling about running the update versus performing a clean install? Updating in place sounds much easier and my usage is not demanding. Office, CS6 and web browser. Occasional light video editing.

With 7 computers, I would try updating in place but knowing that 1 or 2 might fail and need a clean install. I’ve had about 4 out 5 luck on upgrading in place. Thankfully it fails really gracefully as if it never happened. Plus, if things are wonky after install, Windows 10 has a nice reset feature that lets you wipe it to varying degrees.
